When Thai tradition meets modern minimalism
In an apartment building in the Sukhoi district of Bangkok, designer Pim is completing her latest work. She referred to this style as’ New Thai ‘- retaining the spiritual essence of traditional elements, but with extremely simple forms of expression.
Look at this sofa, “Pim caressed the linen cushion,” its shape is a modernist straight line, but the filling is natural latex, a product of rubber plantations in southern Thailand. “The wall uses the traditional” Samut Thai “plaster craftsmanship, but removes the intricate reliefs, leaving only a delicate texture. Pim is particularly skilled at using light. She filters sunlight with bamboo woven lamps and casts mottled shadows on the pure white walls, reminiscent of the flower windows in Thai temples.
The most eye-catching feature of the restaurant area is the long dining table. The desktop is a whole piece of recycled teak wood old door panel, with the original mortise and tenon structure retained at the edges, but the table legs are made of industrial style black metal. Conflict produces beauty, “Pim said with a smile,” just like the city of Bangkok, where ancient and modern are in dialogue every day
